Gentamicin elution profile of SmartSet GHV Gentamicin Bone Cement

چکیده

Introduction There is no doubt that, since the invention of artificial joint replacement, many thousands of people have enjoyed freedom from disabling pain and immobility. However, this remarkable success story is marred by the incidence of local sepsis following surgery, which can lead to prosthesis loosening and the need for revision surgery. In fact, deep wound infections are the most serious adverse event associated with primary cemented joint arthroplasty and have the most profound consequences for both patient and healthcare resources alike.1

Gentamicin release from commercially-available gentamicin-loaded PMMA bone cements in a prosthesis-related interfacial gap model and their antibacterial efficacy

BACKGROUND Around about 1970, a gentamicin-loaded poly (methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement brand (Refobacin Palacos R) was introduced to control infection in joint arthroplasties. In 2005, this brand was replaced by two gentamicin-loaded follow-up brands, Refobacin Bone Cement R and Palacos R + G. In addition, another gentamicin-loaded cement brand, SmartSet GHV, was introduced in Europe in...

Orthopaedic bone cement: do we know what we are using?

Bone cements produced by different manufacturers vary in their mechanical properties and antibiotic elution characteristics. Small changes in the formulation of a bone cement, which may not be apparent to surgeons, can also affect these properties. The supplier of Palacos bone cement with added gentamicin changed in 2005. We carried out a study to examine the mechanical characteristics and anti...

The association between cement type and the subsequent risk of revision surgery in primary total hip replacement

Background and purpose - To further improve the success of joint replacement surgery, attention needs to be paid to variations associated with improved or worsened outcomes. We investigated the association between the type of bone cement used and the risk of revision surgery after primary total hip replacement. Methods - We conducted a prospective study of data from the National Joint Registry ...

Bacterial survival in the interfacial gap in gentamicin-loaded acrylic bone cements.

Clinical experience indicates the beneficial effects of antibiotic-loaded bone cement. Although in vitro studies have shown the formation of a biofilm on its surface they have not considered the gap between the cement and the bone. We have investigated bacterial survival in that gap. Samples with gaps 200 microm wide were made of different bone cements. These were stored dry ('pre-elution') or ...

Microhardness of bi-antibiotic-eluting bone cement scaffolds

Bi-antibiotic-impregnated bone cements (BIBCs) are widely used in orthopaedics as a prophylactic agent (depot) to address post-surgical infections. Although hardness is widely considered a viable index to measure the integrity of the cement structure, there are few specific studies involving changes in hardness characteristics of BIBCs post elution of high doses of two widely used antibiotics: ...
